I suspected there might be a different product key for the 64bit version so I installed theSQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition CD (it contains all files required to install the 32bit or 64bit version) onto a 64bit machine, but the product key was exactly the same.
If I download and install SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation Edition and enter the same product key the installation is successful and the installed product defaults toSQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.
In summary, if I download and install SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation Editionand enter our product key during installation the product installs fine (Standard Edition). However if I download and installSQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation Edition as Evaluation Edition and later try and upgrade it to Standard Edition using our product key, it won't work.
